Architecture
The Theological Significance of the Complex As A Whole The overall architecture of the complex is an attempt to capture in brick, concrete, and glass, the Anabaptist vision of the Church as a disciplined and gathered Community of Believers. The congregation studied the history and theology of the denomination for two years and created a written report that was then submitted to several architects. The final choice of an architect was Edward A. Sövik from Northfield, Minnesota. Mr. Sövik was sympathetic to the theology of the church found within the written report, and he disciplined himself to read widely in Anabaptist sources. The report had stated that the congregation wished the architect to be guided by its own tradition but not bound by it. The overall design of the complex has two sources: one, the Anabaptist vision of the Church as a gathered and discipled Community of Believers; the other, Philippians 2:5-7, where Paul states that Christ emptied himself of his divine glory and took upon himself “the form of a servant.” The strong, clean lines of the building and the honest use of honest materials reflect the Anabaptist vision of the Church. Mr. Sövik felt also that the complex…

Call to Prayer
Prayer is a very important part of any Christian’s life, and here at Zion Mennonite Church we encourage prayer in a variety of ways. Every Sunday morning at 8:15 am prior to the start of our Worship Service we have an informal time of prayer. This is open for anyone who wants to attend, we meet in the prayer room, a special place that has been set up to help concentrate on prayer and leave the business of life behind. We begin by bringing any praises or prayer concerns to the group and close with a time of prayer. This is a way of spiritually preparing ourselves for our Sunday morning time of worship. The Call to Prayer section of our weekly bulletin lists prayer concerns not only within our congregation but also includes friends and family members. This is a way of keeping the congregation aware of any prayer concerns that have arisen each week. We become aware of these concerns many different ways; they can be called into the office, or written on a Prayer concern sheet that is located on the podium outside the Sanctuary door. The Prayer Chain consists of a group of people committed to…

Music
“We are a singing people.” The importance of music within the life of Zion was best summarized in this statement made by the Worship and Fine Arts Committee created to study the music needs of the congregation when the current facility was being planned. The rich history and love of music plays an integral part in each gathering of worship. An experienced and dedicated staff continues the tradition and heritage of music in worship. Choirs Adult Choir The adult choir is comprised of approximately 25 individuals. It sings at the 9:00 a.m. service approximately three times per month during the months of September – June. The primary focus of their music is directed towards the classical composers of the church. The choir practices weekly on Wednesday evenings. Youth Choir Youth in grades 3 through 8 participate in this choir. Weekly practices are held immediately after the 9:00 a.m. worship service (from 10:00 to 10:15 a.m.). The choir usually sings once a month during the months of October through June. Bell Choir Adults and youth enjoy the variety of playing bells and/or chimes for special programs throughout the year. The number of choirs is dependent upon the number of individuals participating…
